FMC Elektron Electric Crossover Moves Into Production Phase, Shifts Focus from Jeepney Modernization
Breaking: FMC Elektron Advances Beyond Prototyping
Manila, Philippines – Francisco Motors Corp (FMC) has confirmed that its all-electric crossover, the FMC Elektron, has moved beyond the prototyping stage, marking a significant milestone for the company. The vehicle is now being prepared for production, signaling a strategic pivot away from FMC's traditional focus on public utility vehicles toward the consumer electric vehicle (EV) market.

Automotive industry analyst Dr. Maria Santos of the Philippine Institute for Transportation called the development "a game-changer for local EV adoption." She added, "FMC's move from jeepneys to a modern crossover shows they see the long-term shift in consumer demand."
From Jeepneys to Electric Crossovers
FMC has long been associated with the iconic Philippine jeepney, a staple of public transport. However, the company's recent work on the Elektron represents a break from this legacy. The Elektron is an all-electric crossover designed for personal use, not public transport.
Chairman Francisco M. Cruz Jr. stated in a press release, "We are not abandoning the jeepney segment, but we must also embrace the future of mobility. The Elektron is our answer to the growing demand for clean, personal transportation."
Background
Much of the public discussion in the Philippines has centered on jeepney modernization, which aims to replace aging diesel jeepneys with cleaner alternatives. FMC has been a part of that conversation, but its development of the Elektron indicates a parallel track. The company invested heavily in research and development for an electric platform that could serve both commercial and private sectors.
Prototypes of the Elektron were first shown at the Philippine Electric Vehicle Summit in 2022. Since then, FMC has refined the design, battery system, and drivetrain. The vehicle is expected to have a range of over 300 kilometers and a competitive price point.
What This Means
For the Philippine EV market, the Elektron's production readiness could accelerate adoption. Currently, EVs represent less than 1% of new car sales in the country due to high costs and limited charging infrastructure. A locally produced, affordable crossover could change that dynamic.
"If FMC delivers on price and reliability, this could be the tipping point for EVs in the Philippines," said Dr. Santos. "It also pressures other manufacturers to bring their electric models to market faster."
For FMC, the Elektron diversifies its portfolio. The company can now compete with global brands like Nissan and BYD, which have already introduced electric crossovers in the region. However, FMC's local manufacturing base gives it a cost advantage.
Next Steps
FMC has not yet announced a specific launch date or pricing for the production version of the Elektron. Sources within the company say certification and road tests are underway. A limited release is expected within the next 12 months.
The company is also exploring partnerships for charging infrastructure. Chairman Cruz emphasized, "We are building an ecosystem, not just a car. The Elektron is the first step."
