Warhammer 40,000: Mechanicus 2 Arrives Early During Warhammer Skulls Showcase: What to Expect
Early Release During Skulls Event
The annual Warhammer Skulls event has evolved from a simple week of discounts and freebies into a major showcase for upcoming Warhammer video games. This year, the event delivers an unexpected surprise: Warhammer 40,000: Mechanicus 2, the turn-based tactics sequel, will launch during the Skulls broadcast on May 21—earlier than many anticipated. Fans of the original are eager to dive in, especially after the demo left a strong impression. Robin Valentine of PC Gamer described it as "a tantalising slice of what could be the next great Warhammer strategy game."

A Revamped Cognition System
One of the most anticipated changes in Mechanicus 2 is the overhauled Cognition system. Unlike the first game, where Cognition points were shared across your forces, each unit now generates and spends its own points in unique ways. This design forces players to adapt tactics based on individual squad members' capabilities. The system promises deeper strategic choices, as you'll need to balance activating powerful abilities while managing each unit's resource generation.
New Faction: Leagues of Votann
The sequel also introduces a major new faction to the Warhammer 40,000 universe: the Leagues of Votann. Known informally as "Space Dwarfs" or by the old term "Squats," this hardy race makes their first appearance in a 40K video game. The Leagues bring heavy armor, advanced technology, and a tenacious playstyle that contrasts sharply with the Adeptus Mechanicus's precision. For veterans, this addition opens up fresh tactical permutations and lore-rich encounters.
What Else to Expect from the Showcase
The Warhammer Skulls broadcast will be packed with reveals across multiple titles. Highlights include:
- Darktide – A potential new class reveal.
- Space Marine 2 – More gameplay or story details.
- Dawn of War 4 – Likely an update or teaser.
- Rogue Trader and Dark Heresy – News from the RPG side.
- Warhammer Survivors – A new entry? Possibly a survivor-like game.
- Boltgun 2 – The sequel to the retro shooter.
- Battlesector – Expansion or update.
- Total War: Warhammer 3 – Another DLC or patch announcement.
Notably, while many hope for an update on the rumored Total War: Warhammer 40,000, Creative Assembly has stated that news on that front won't arrive until late June. So don't expect it during the Skulls event.

Host and Special Guest
The showcase will be hosted by Alanah Pearce, who also voices Nyra Veyrath, a playable Celestian of the Sisters of Battle in Boltgun 2. Her dual role adds a personal touch to the presentation.
